New Delhi [India], November 10 (ANI): Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Sunday said that Special Swachhata Campaign has, so far, earned Rs 4085 crore and 24 lakhs through five dedicated annual cleanliness (Swachhata) campaigns lasting one month each, every October, since 2021, through disposal of scrap, including electronic scrap, from different Central government offices.
In a post on X, Jitendra Singh shared, "Special Swachhata Campaign has, so far, earned Rs 4085 Cr. and 24 Lacs through five dedicated annual cleanliness (Swachhata) campaigns lasting one month each, every October, since 2021, through disposal of scrap, including electronic scrap, from different Central government offices."
"231.75 lac sq ft of space freed for productive utility which was earlier choked and blocked with waste material, worn out furniture, scrap, etc," he added.
The Union Minister emphasised that the initiative is inspired by a mass cleanliness movement that took off following PM Narendra Modi's "Swachhata" call from the ramparts of Red Fort.
"Interestingly, the amount of over Rs 4,085 crore earned by selling off the scrap could be the total budget of one mega Space mission or multiple Chandrayaan Space missions, while the total space freed was enough to bring up a huge mall or some other massive structure for economic activity," Jitendra Singh said.
He further stated that the Ministry of Science & Technology has undertaken extensive "Waste to Wealth" activities, which include the recycling of hospital waste through a technology developed by CSIR-NIIST, Thiruvananthapuram.
"Ministry of Science & Technology has undertaken extensive "Waste to Wealth" activity which, for example, includes recycling of hospital waste through a technology developed by #CSIR -NIIST Thiruvananthapuram and deployed at AIIMS New Delhi, recycling of cooked oil undertaken by CSIR-IIP Dehradun and use of steel sludge for road construction through technology developed by CSIR-CRRI New Delhi," he further shared.
The Special Campaign 5.0, launched on September 15, 2025, concluded on October 31 after extensive activities across the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and its field units, including Licensed Service Areas (LSAs), Controller of Communication Accounts (CCAs), and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).
