Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday visited Lakshmipur A Block village in Baksa district in the aftermath of a recent law and order situation that arose outside the Baksa district jail during the transfer of two accused individuals, involved in death of singer Zubeen Garg, to the jail.
The CM met with the families of the injured and handed over cheques of Rs 2 lakh each for their medical treatment.
Later, responding to the ongoing protests over the death of Zubeen, Sarma said that 50% of the protests will be over if he resigned and the remaining 50% will be over if Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi was made the chief minister.
Garg died under mysterious circumstances in Singapore on September 19. Since then , there have been continuous protests seeking justice for Garg. Sarma has been alleging that a section of people was doing politics over Zubeen's death.
On Wednesday last week, mobs resorted to stone pelting and police vehicles were burnt while the five accused in Zubeen death case were being taken to the Baksa jail. The unrest led to police firing to contain the situation, resulting in injuries to two individuals. Rapid Action Force was rushed to the area and prohibitory orders were clamped after that.
Hundreds of people had gathered along the road in Baksa and threw stones at the convoy carrying the five accused, forcing the police to resort to firing in the air and charging batons to disperse the crowd. Police had to lob tear gas shells. Baska is around 100kms from Guwahati.
After visiting Baksa on Tuesday, Sarma said, "50% of the protests will be over if I resign and the remaining 50% will be over if Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi is made chief minister. These protests are not aimed at giving justice to Zubeen but the aim is to create trouble as there was hardly any opportunity to create trouble in the last four-and-a-half years of this government."
The chief minister said that the BJP, together with fans and followers of Zubeen, is trying to preserve the legacy of the singer. "We will finish the unfinished tasks of the legendary singer," he added.
BJP has decided to launch a state-wide campaign titled 'Moiu Zubeen, Amiu Zubeen' (I am also Zubeen, We are also Zubeen) from October 23. The campaign will seek a fast-tracked probe into Zubeen's death and steps to preserve his legacy for future generations.
The 'Moiu Zubeen, Amiu Zubeen" campaign will also include a 10-point agenda focused on celebrating and sustaining the late artist's legacy. The plans include installing statues of Zubeen, establishing two music schools - one each in the names of Zubeen and Bhupen Hazarika - in every assembly constituency represented by the BJP, and planting Nahor tree saplings, Zubeen's favourite, across the state.
