In Sanatan Dharma, time is regarded as a sacred element of life, and its purity and correct use hold deep spiritual meaning. Recently, revered saint Premanand Maharaj spoke about the importance of the sunset period, explaining why activities like eating or engaging in sensual pleasures are prohibited during this time. According to him, the 48 minutes surrounding sunset are considered highly auspicious for spiritual growth and should be used solely for devotion and meditation.
The Sacred 48 Minutes Around Sunset
Premanand Maharaj highlighted that the period spanning 24 minutes before and 24 minutes after sunset—totalling 48 minutes—is considered extremely holy. Scriptures describe this time as ideal for prayer, introspection, and connection with the divine. He said, “The 24 minutes before and 24 minutes after sunset are very sacred. During this time, eating, sexual intercourse, and other worldly activities should be avoided.”
Why Eating and Other Activities Are Restricted
Maharaj explained that this 48-minute window is meant for spiritual elevation, not for fulfilling bodily needs. Eating during this period is discouraged because the digestive system begins to slow down at sunset, and food consumed at this time can negatively affect both body and mind. Similarly, sensual activities are restricted as this sacred period is dedicated to inner peace, meditation, and self-realization rather than indulgence in physical pleasures.
How to Utilize the Sunset Period Spiritually
Premanand Maharaj advised that instead of eating or engaging in material tasks, devotees should remain calm and use this time for devotional practices. Offering water to the Sun God, chanting the Gayatri Mantra, performing Guru Mantra Japa, or reciting the name of the Lord (Naam Japa) are considered most beneficial during this period. He emphasized that this short time can purify the mind and soul, bringing immense spiritual merit.
For Those Unable to Observe Fully
Understanding that many people are busy with work or travel during sunset, Maharaj said that if one cannot fully dedicate the time, at least a few moments should be spared to remember or chant the name of God. Even brief remembrance during this sacred time is said to have powerful spiritual effects.
