Donald Trump yet again faced embarrassment at the 250th anniversary of the Navy when he attempted to provoke boos for former President Barack Obama.
During his address, Trump praised his former White House doctor Ronny Jackson, describing him as a "man everybody loves." He referred to Obama as "Barack Hussein Obama" and questioned the audience, asking, "Have you heard of him?"
When the crowd remained silent instead of responding with boos or applause, Trump quickly moved past the moment.
The first lady, Melania Trump, experienced a similarly awkward moment while addressing the audience. She greeted them with the phrase, "Hooya Navy," a term traditionally used by the US Navy to boost morale and show enthusiasm. Her delivery led to a prolonged pause followed by brief applause as she repeated the greeting.
Social media users criticised her speech, with one user commenting, "This is the cringest thing I've ever seen," and another adding, "MAGA are losing it over Bad Bunny but his English is better than Melania's."
The event took place amid an ongoing government shutdown. Despite the situation, Trump on Truth Social said, “I believe, ‘THE SHOW MUST GO ON!’ This will be the largest Celebration in the History of the Navy. Thousands of our brave Active Duty Service members and Military Families will be in attendance, and I look forward to this special day with all of them."
He accused Democrats of causing the shutdown to allow "illegal aliens come into our country and get massive health care at the cost to everybody else," suggesting they were trying "to destroy this wonderful celebration of the US Navy’s Birthday.”
